LIBERTY Ostrava
Our journey to GREENSTEEL and CN30

STEEL & ALUMINIUM INDUSTRY FACE A TRILEMMA

OUR GREENSTEEL AND CN30 VISION
- LIBERTY Ostrava aims to transform into a modern steel mill delivering an economically, environmentally and socially sustainable business.
Our GREENSTEEL programme will deliver:
- Modernisation of the steel shop with the installation of two Electric Arc Furnaces (EAFs)
- reducing CO2 emissions per tonne of steel by up to 90% by 2030 - Modernisation of the plant’s strategic Longs and Steckel mill to incorporate new technologies and digitalisation
- Installation of a new Thin Slab Casting & Rolling and new Cold Rolling Mill complex
- Renewable solar power for electricity
- Improved scrap capacity to feed the EAFs
- Green Hydrogen produced from renewable sources to be used in all currently NG-powered reheating processes
Supported by the LIBERTY Ostrava GREENSTEEL Academy
In line with GFG & LIBERTY Steel Group’s ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030 (CN30)
OUR CARBON NEUTRAL VISION FOR LIBERTY OSTRAVA

OUR CARBON NEUTRAL VISION FOR LIBERTY OSTRAVA
- Fundamental to fulfilling LIBERTY Ostrava’s CN30 vision
- Two EAFs will replace the existing 4 tandem furnaces
- The new EAFs can be operated with 100% scrap or a mix
of 60-70% scrap & 30-40% HBI/cold DRI
This modern and highly flexible technology will allow LIBERTY Ostrava to:
- Progressively increase the scrap component in its steel production, reducing emissions by up to 95%
- Close its Blast Furnaces by 2028
- Become a leader in GREENSTEEL production in central and Eastern Europe
The supplier of the hybrid electric arc furnaces has now been chosen and will be announced shortly

MODERNISATION OF STRATEGIC DOWNSTREAM MILLS
Heavy Section and Wire Rod mills
- Will upgrade mills’ reheating furnaces so that they can operate without BF & coke gas
- Upgrade will also contribute to unblocking bottlenecks within
the mill
Long Rolling mills
- Modernisation and automation programme to allow better control of process parameters, optimise production and reduce energy consumption

NEW MILLS
Installation of a new Thin Slab Casting & Rolling line (TSCR)
- Implementation of a new TSCR line with 1.6 Mt capacity
- Will produce higher quality hot roll coils for customers managing the stringent demands of the engineering, whitegoods and automotive sectors
Development of new Cold Rolling Mill complex
- Will improve financial contribution from Flat finished goods by increasing Ostrava’s high added value product portfolio
- Will expand Ostrava’s capability matrix into supply for the automotive industry as well as other areas of general engineering application, which have a significant share of the Czech Republic’s economy

LEVERAGING THE REGION’S NEW POWER LINE
- A new 400 KV power line “ZVN line” adding the Ostrava region to the National Grid is expected to be installed by 2025/26 on the carbon-heavy electricity produced by TAMEH Power Station
Benefits will include:
- Provision of the increased power supply capacity required by LIBERTY Ostrava’s new EAF technology
- Removal of Ostrava’s dependency on the carbon-heavy electricity produced by TAMEH Power Station
