Born in Wales, Carwyn studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, before training as a barrister and being called to the Bar at Gray’s Inn in 1989.
Carwyn practised as a barrister at Gower Chambers, Swansea, for ten years before his election to the Welsh Assembly in 1999.
Carwyn held several ministerial positions across local government, agriculture, environment and education before his appointment as Counsel General and Leader of the House.
In December 2009, he became First Minister and Leader of the Labour Party in Wales, a position he held until 2018.
Carwyn is currently a Professor of Law at Aberystwyth University.
