What is the GFG Foundation?
The GFG Foundation is a registered charity, founded by Nicola and Sanjeev Gupta and established in the UK in 2017, expanded into Australia in 2019, and more recently into Romania in July 2021. Plans are in place to launch into the Czech Republic and Poland during 2022.
The GFG Foundation seeks to inspire, empower, and enable young people in industrial communities to reach their life and employment potential.
We do this through running school programmes in areas where GFG Alliance has a significant presence. These programmes give students some important skills to help them towards being job-ready after school. These include STEM based learning programmes, designed to involve students in problem solving real-world issues that are happening in their local communities.
Throughout this, there is a strong focus on self-esteem building, so that students develop a confidence in using their own voice, expressing their points of view, so they are better able to navigate an adult world after school.

Aims of the GFG Foundation
Our aim is to close the emerging skills gap, particularly in science and engineering. We want to dispel the myths about industry and showcase new technologies and innovations – explaining to young people that it’s not just hard hats and noise. We are committed to highlighting the fantastic opportunities for young people to be part of the transformation, and we seek to demonstrate how industry is adopting new technologies to become greener as it strives towards net zero.
Longer term, our aim for the GFG Foundation is to continue to support young people by encouraging and informing them as to the opportunities that exist in the ever changing and evolving industrial world
Working with partners
We work with several partners to deliver both student programmes and a variety of scholarships.
In the UK, our main partner is the Engineering Development Trust, or EDT, who deliver the Industrial Cadet programme, which was inspired by HRH The Prince of Wales. The Foundation has worked with EDT for over 4 years and during that time, have supported over 5,000 young people through various levels of the Industrial Cadet programme.
In Australia, we work alongside CSIRO, which is a government science agency, and The Prince’s Trust Australia to help deliver our Student Programme. The programme launched three years ago in Whyalla and expanded this year into Newcastle, New South Wales.
Our programmes for Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland are currently in development and we are looking launch these early in 2022.
Educational resources – Did you know videos
We wanted to create a global resource, something for students and teachers that could be used in the classroom, as a home learning resource or a fun family activity that was available to everyone no matter where you were based in the world.
In each of the videos, we have taken a key environmental topic, for example, Steel Recycling and Carbon Capture, explained this in simple terms and then demonstrated how this links to industry and the impact on sustainability.
We have also used these resources internally to educate our own workforce on the huge array of businesses that make up the GFG Alliance. Translations of the videos are also available, making them a resource we are promoting world-wide.
